places invoved in my topic.
My topic is “Encouraging club activity at CSUSB”. So, this issue can happen everywhere on campus or even off campus if students think about that outside of campus. If I have to pick one certain place to talk about “where”, I will say student union without hesitation. That is because club advertisement or meeting occurs inside or around the building. When students see that kind of gathering people, they could think about involving some clubs. Also, the office that in charge of club is located on second floor of the building. If I display something about club activity to make students know about the information, Student union will be the first place to start.

I agree. I have been at this school for awhile and whenever I want to access some sort of information, club or otherwise, I get the run around. And yes, I literally run around. The whole campus. I get the feeling that people who are supposed to provide the students with extra-curricular, financial, or heck, even basic academic information sometimes have the attitude of "Yeah, whatever. It's somewhere in Sierra Hall. Or at least somewhere in San Bernardino. I wanna go home". This is problematic because after a certain point, the student may give up on their everlasting search for the Piano Lovers Club or Club for People Who Enjoy Cake (see I had to make those up because I still don't know which clubs are available). And sure, many will say, if you really want to join something, you'll pursue it as long as you must. Think about the other activities in a college student's life, though. Clubs can add great experiences for the college student, but aren't absolutely vital, so they can be given up on to make way for classes, etc. Or maybe the lack of info leads to the majority of students never even knowing a certain club exists. It took me months to get all of the information for studying abroad and the flier said it was easy. Ha. Ha. Ha.
ReplyDeletePhew. I needed to start a new paragraph, I think. Your ideas sound great and could make this commuter campus feel more warm, fuzzy, and inviting. Be accessible, club leaders. Make signs, post them in highly populated areas, be friendly, and answer your emails. At this school, I have never been handed a flier about a club. Well, about nightclubs sure, but not school clubs. Maybe it's me haha, who knows? Some students don't want to spend much time at school. Learning is fun (...), but there are other things I want to do so I leave quickly. Increased club activity would make me stay a little longer.
I am just curious to what your specific complaints are. I understand that you are encouraging student involvement on campus, but what has frustrated you to the point of wanting to write 5 pages on this topic. Are there not enough club opportunities? Are the current clubs not promoting their clubs?
ReplyDeleteI like the idea! I am new here at csusb and I really haven't heard much about clubs besides the sororities and fraternities.
That definitely makes a lot of sense. Putting your attention on the hub of the active location is a good idea. That way a student might see the club advertising and decide to check it out if they're right there.
